By 1913, it is estimated that almost
one billion postcards were mailed in the U.S. alone. Cheap
and reliable, these missives were often used to set up engagements
in just one day.
Due to their compact size, postcards
were easy to collect. For David L. Newman of Windsor, Ontario,
saving old postcards became a passion. He has devoted the
last 23 years building a magnificent collection of his city’s
postcards. More than 280 of them are represented here and
offer a fascinating glimpse into this region’s rich
and colourful history.
Within these pages are a mostly
lost world. Pastoral settings, Victorian and Edwardian buildings,
idyllic boulevards, ancient automobiles and outdated fashions
harken back to “simpler” times. In fact, this
book serves as a catalogue of sorts for many fine buildings
that fell victim to the wrecker’s ball over the last
100 years. “The Border Cities,” once encompassing
Windsor, Walkerville, Ford City (later East Windsor) and Sandwich,
are well represented here.
Prepare to travel through time…
“This is wonderful collection
of rare historic postcards – beautifully presented and
captioned. It provides the reader with a fascinating look
at the Windsor of yesteryear.”
Nancy Morand, M.A., MCIP, RPP
Heritage Planner, City of Windsor
